Do you have a room for a French visitor?

April 25, 2019

Thame and District Twinning Association.
Do you have a spare bedroom and are you free the weekend of
10th - 12th May?
If so and you want to have a very enjoyable weekend, please read on.

Thame has been twinned with Montesson near Paris since 2001. We are an independent
and self financing organisation with active members in Thame and the surrounding
villages. Our aim is to facilitate visits and exchanges between the people and associations
of Thame and Montesson.
Every year in May we welcome a group of around 35 visitors from Montesson to Thame
and although many of our guests stay with the same people who have become their
friends, there are always new people whom we need to accommodate and we hope that
some of you will want to give it a go! Most of us make the return trip in September and are
hosted in turn by our new friends, but this is by no means obligatory.
You may fear that hosting requires lots of cooking, entertaining, expense and a big house.
I would like to reassure you to the contrary. The French are very happy to "muck in" as it
were. Children are used to having to share a bed with siblings and/or sharing a room with
their parents. They don't need their own en suite facilities and there is a full programme, so
there isn't much time for you to have to entertain and moreover, half of the meals are
communal and provided.
There are usually a few people who come alone, so even if you only have room for one,
that will be a great help. If your French is a bit rusty or non-existent, most of our friends
speak English and it's amazing how much you can communicate with just a few actions
and pointing. One of the greatest friendships of twinning was between 2 widowed men,
neither of whom spoke the other's language!
You will need to provide supper on the Friday evening, bed and breakfast for 2 nights and
lunch/ brunch before departure at around 2pm on the Sunday. There will be a full day
excursion on the Saturday and, subject to space on the bus, you are welcome to join your
guests for the day. Most people don't, but if you choose to, a picnic lunch is provided for
you and your guests. We have a fully catered evening meal and music in the barn at
Towersey Manor on the Saturday evening. Guests and their host family are invited to
attend free of charge.
